![]() ![]() Up until he is taken by Jason and tortured intensely this is all we get to see of the character and until this point his character development can be compared to that of Ganta from the anime series and manga Deadman Wonderland in that it is centered around him becoming stronger to face the cruel realities of the situation he is thrown into and it is a story of adaptation and survival for the most part. If you have followed this character from his very beginnings up to now you would also know that this character has been through some pretty gruesome experiences and isn’t exactly mentally stable through the entirety of the series, in fact, it is likely that he was still suffering from other kinds of mental disorders from the very beginning such as major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and even PTSD is a possibility. This leads to him having feelings of regret over the things that he hadn’t done which become even more apparent later on in both the anime and the manga as he seeks to become stronger. This is recurrent in the story that Kaneki ends up feeling useless or that he could have done more to help his friends when they needed it the most. When the CCG came into the spotlight and killed Hinami’s mother Kaneki and Hinami were both there to witness it and this left Kaneki feeling powerless that he couldn’t do so much as save the girl’s mother. Upon meeting Hinami we get to see him teaching the younger girl to read and the relationship between the two quickly develop into one similar to that of a boy and his little sister, by this point, Kaneki had grown attached to the others at the cafe Anteiku and they were like family to him. We get to see the character develop through his experiences both good and bad after his transformation and slowly move from his initial misunderstanding and fear of Ghouls to his acceptance of them and thus himself but through it all never turning his back on his humanity either. We learn more about how kindhearted Kaneki is at the beginning and how that sometimes turned on him and how his kindness border lined naivety on several occasions. From the first time you see him at Anteiku to his current status in the Tokyo Ghoul: Re Manga the character is hardly recognizable.Īs the story progresses and we learn more about him as a person from his reactions to his transformation from a human to one-eyed ghoul to his relationship with his best friend Hide and others that he meets along the way including Touka, Hinami, Nishiki, and others. He is generally quiet and enjoys reading, he comes across as someone who is easy to get along with and the type of guy if you’re like me you would want to learn more about. Kaneki begins his journey coming across as your average everyday college student. ![]() But for many including myself, another huge factor was seeing the progression of one particular character and that is the protagonist Kaneki Ken. If your anything like me the series is one of your all-time favorites because of the kind of overall message it tells it’s audience. If there is anything that the majority of us got out of the Tokyo Ghoul franchise it’s that you shouldn’t immediately judge others too harshly and that even someone who may initially seem like a complete outsider and nothing more than a monster may be much more human than you may initially think. If you have only watched the animated series or are not up to date with the Tokyo Ghoul :Re Manga than I suggest not reading into this post any farther for spoilers lie ahead, you have been warned.
