The delicate balance between practical hues and lively brights can be best summed up by Leatrice Eisemen, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, when the colors of 2021 were chosen: "The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. In an act of restraint, designers, including Kim Jones of Fendi, Gabriela Hearst, and Collina Strada, chose to firmly root their collections in reality via monochromatic looks in colors that literally remind us of the ground: rich dark browns that look like soil (Pantone cleverly coined this shade "root beer" brown) and reddish-browns that resemble adobe clay. ![]() Still, we're not out of the woods just yet. Perhaps that's the point: to remind us of clothes from the Before Times, like a trio of hot pink gowns from Prabal Gurung or a delicate pleated dress by Victoria Beckham in siren red. But the most startling difference this go-around is the blatant, unadulterated joy in the pieces, which manifested in bolts of brilliant yellows, fiery reds, and fuchsia - colors so fiercely bold and feminine, they could almost be seen as an affront to the sweats we've been living in for the past year. The result was like the Calm app in clothing form: a comforting sartorial message of hope amid a (very) turbulent year.Īnd for the fall/winter 2021 season, that hope remains a constant with classic, muted shades like soft grays (as chic suiting at Vetements) and frosty pale pinks (as a bejeweled dress at Erdem). Designers stuck to basic silhouettes and a serene color palette of soothing powder blues, sage greens, and mellow corals for the most part. To put it plainly, last season's collections were cautiously optimistic.

![]() Of course, it was Joplin’s seismic presence that caused all the commotion, as evidenced by her shattering performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, which was captured for posterity by filmmaker D.A. ![]() The band’s increasingly high-profile shows earned them a devoted fan base and serious industry attention they signed with Columbia Records and released their major-label debut in 1967. Her adoption of a wild sartorial style – with granny glasses, frizzed-out hair and extravagant attire that winked, hippie-style, at the burlesque era – further spiked her burgeoning reputation. But California drew her back into its glittering embrace in 1966, when she joined the Haight-based psychedelic-rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company. She returned to Texas to escape the excesses of the Haight, enrolling as a sociology student at Lamar University, adopting a beehive hairdo and living a generally “straight” life despite occasional forays to perform in Austin. These tracks – including blues standards like “Trouble in Mind” and “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out” – would later surface as the infamous “Typewriter Tapes” bootleg. She met up with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen (later of the legendary San Francisco rock outfit Jefferson Airplane) and the pair recorded a suite of songs with his wife, Margareta, providing the beat on her typewriter. She briefly attended college in Beaumont and Austin but was more drawn to blues legends and beat poetry than her studies soon she dropped out and, in 1963, headed for San Francisco, eventually finding herself in the notoriously drug-fueled Haight Ashbury neighborhood. A self-described “misfit” in high school, she suffered virtual ostracism, but dabbled in folk music with her friends and painted. Her volcanic performances left audiences stunned and speechless, while her sexual magnetism, world-wise demeanor and flamboyant style shattered every stereotype about female artists – and essentially invented the “rock mama” paradigm.īorn in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1943, Joplin fell under the sway of Leadbelly, Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton in her teens, and the authenticity of these voices strongly influenced her decision to become a singer. She claimed the blues, soul, gospel, country and rock with unquestionable authority and verve, fearlessly inhabiting psychedelic guitar jams, back-porch roots and everything in between. ![]() But Janis Joplin didn’t merely possess a great instrument she threw herself into every syllable, testifying from the very core of her being. That voice – high, husky, earthy, explosive – remains among the most distinctive and galvanizing in pop history. Its bass line is incredibly popular and most people would recognise it after just a few seconds of listening. But one of the best-known tracks is definitely Ace of Spades, which comes from the album of the same name. Many of which people consider to be all-time classics. The rock band Motorhead certainly have knocked out any number of well-known heavy metal tunes. Here are some particularly noteworthy examples of the Ace of Spades in use in popular culture as a foreteller of death and disaster in the past. But its association with death goes back much further. Today many people associate the Ace of Spades with its propaganda part in the Vietnam War. If people see symbols of good luck and believe in them, then this may help increase their optimism and confidence. For example, the Ace of Spades may induce uncertainty, fear and lack of confidence. This can result in psychological effects that can introduce new states of emotion. And from there it’s only a very short step to becoming truths. These ideas then start to manifest themselves as opinions. The problem comes from the fact that people are very susceptible to silly ideas. It would be the same as thinking that receiving it during a casino game would actually increase your jackpot winning chances. You would have to be either senile or incredibly superstitious to believe that a piece of card can control your fortune. Of course, it’s still rather childish to imagine that a simple playing card and its design can bring about bad luck. but going back further and history we can see that the Ace of Spades has represented poor fortune across the ages. If you sat and had your future read by a French fortune-teller then you may consider the Ace of Spades as a bringer of bad luck. But nevertheless, whether via propaganda or reality, the idea that the Ace of Spades was an element of ill-fortune certainly took root thanks to its use during the Vietnam campaign. There is a Western lie based on ignorance, that Eastern foreigners are more superstitious than Americans. You have to remember that propaganda was going on on both sides. It meant nothing to them and during the Vietnam War most Vietnamese never saw one. In truth, we now know that the Viet Cong had no fear of the playing card, the Ace of Spades. In this way, they made themselves the harbingers of death in the eyes of the Viet Cong. ![]() And many US troops would place them in the webbing belts of their helmets. They would also scatter them in the jungle. They would place them on the bodies as a form of calling card. Whenever they came across the corpses of enemy combatants the US soldiers would leave the Ace of Spades. As a means to promote fear amongst the Viet Cong soldiers. Once the cards arrived, then the US army started using them as a means of propaganda. As a result, they sent thousands of decks containing only Ace of Spades. The Bicycle Playing Card Company thought this was a worthy effort in helping the troops. Because of this, 2 officers from Company C, 2nd Battalion, 35th regiment, 24th Infantry Division contacted the Bicycle Playing Card Company and asked if they would provide decks that contained only the Ace of Spades. But the US Government thought the idea could be a morale booster for their own troops. In reality, these cards meant nothing to the Viet Cong. It was said that they would even retreat at the sight of the card. When the American GI’s got involved in the Vietnam War they heard that the Vietnamese were very superstitious of the Ace of Spades thanks to the old French fortune telling superstitions. In the traditional French/Vietnam method of divining the future with playing cards, the Ace of Spades was to show bad luck or death. ![]() And though these were used for many of the gambling jackpot games we know today, such as those you can find at the excellent online casino, 22Bet Casino, one of the most popular uses ack then was for fortune-telling. The French introduced many aspects of European culture including playing cards. If you know a little history, then you’ll know that Vietnam was once a French colony as part of the Indochina region. ![]() In more modern times the Ace of Spades became known as the death card is probably thanks to its use during the Vietnam War. That the Ace of Spades is a symbol of death dates back many centuries. The fact that this has the name of “spade” could have some association with digging a grave or a plot for a coffin. This often has an association with both evil and death. Looking at the card on a surface level, we can see that the Ace of Spades is black. Especially as far as disaster, hate, bad fortune and death are considered. It’s interesting to note, that in many cultures, even though separated by tens of thousands of kilometres, it holds the same meaning. Historically, the Ace of Spades has conjured up many different ideas related to death and fear. Claim Bonus 22Bet Casino review Why the Death Card? Researchers have not named specific regions or telcos that sell SIM cards with this app installed, but they claim more than 1 billion people in no fewer than 30 countries use it, and it is in Browser that the abovementioned vulnerability was discovered. The Browser app has not been updated since 2009, and although in modern devices its functions are performed by other programs, Browser is still actively used - or at the very least, is still installed on many SIM cards. For example, Browser can supply information about your account balance. It is used for viewing Web pages of a certain format and pages located on the carrier’s internal network. One of the apps included in the STK is called Browser. STK responds to external commands, such as buttons pressed on the carrier menu, and makes the phone perform certain actions, such as sending SMS messages or USSD commands. Remember that your SIM card is in fact a tiny computer with its own operating system and programs. The menu is essentially an app - or more precisely, several apps with the general name SIM Toolkit (STK) - but these programs do not run on the phone itself, but on the SIM card. iOS buries it deep in the Settings (under SIM Application), and in Android smartphones it’s a standalone app called SIM Toolkit. Old phones had it right in the main menu. This menu includes tasks such as Balance Check, Recharge, Technical Support, and sometimes extras such as Weather, or even Horoscope, and so on. Most SIM cards released since the early 2000s, including eSIM, feature a carrier menu. I reviewed other striker-fired pistols later with a similar barrel length, but all of them had a lower mag capacity. SIG Sauer knew exactly how they were going to change the industry – they managed to release a compact pistol with the shortest barrel but a great maximum mag capacity (more about that in a moment).įor me, it was shocking to see the company actually pulling it off when it was first released. This is a great gun that is worth the money and will not let you down.Īlthough the accuracy suffers at long range, it still remains a pretty reliable striker-fired pistol to get in 2022. Glock 19 handgun owners will certainly use this model for many years to come. I also want you to pay attention to the gun’s size: it’s a compact semiautomatic pistol with a textured handle. Additionally, it was also quite comfortable. The handle may look a bit short, but I could grip it tightly in my palm. The handle wasn’t slippery because of the ribbed texture it had.
